The Trading Post is a building which allows you to donate certain resources with your alliance members. When donating resources, they will be sent via a trader leading pack mule. Trading is not an instant transaction; the trader will occupy a troop dispatch queue (shared with commanders), walk to the target city, and then walk back. Trading over long distances can take several minutes or more.
The maximum amount of resources that can be moved in one trip is called the transportation capacity and increases with each upgrade of the trading post. Each transaction is taxed at the tax rate, which also decreases with each upgrade of the trading post.
