Siege units are the fourth troops available to the governor of a newly-founded city. They are trained and upgraded in the Siege Workshop and they are able to gather more resources with their higher troop load, even though they are unsuitable for most combat operations due to them being weak against all other unit types. Several commanders have the ability to specialize their talents to boost gathering effectiveness, including Cleopatra VII, Seondeok, Matilda of Flanders, and Gaius Marius.
